At the asphaleia training centre, we recently had the pleasure of welcoming Sergeant Craig Burgess from Sussex Police, who joined our ESOL groups to discuss Hate Crime Awareness. This valuable session gave students the chance to learn about different forms of hate crime, understand their rights, and find out how to get help if they encounter or witness hate incidents.
Sergeant Burgess led an engaging discussion, sharing real-life examples and explaining how Sussex Police supports victims of hate crime. One of the highlights of his visit was the Q&A session, where students could ask questions and hear about his work and experiences firsthand.
They asked questions like, “What’s the process to become a police officer?”, “Can you share a time when you helped someone in your community?”, and “What rights do young people have if they are stopped by the police?”
This interactive session offered students practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of the support available to them, helping them feel more confident and informed about addressing and preventing hate crime in their communities. A huge thank you to Sergeant Burgess for his time, dedication, and the valuable insights he shared!
