Choosing next steps can feel exciting, overwhelming, or a bit of both. That’s why high‑quality careers advice plays such an important role in further education. At asphaleia training, we’re committed to helping every student make informed, confident decisions about their future. This commitment is guided by the Gatsby Benchmarks, the eight evidence‑based standards that define what excellent careers education looks like in schools and colleges across the UK.

The Gatsby Benchmarks emphasise things like:

  • Providing impartial and personalised guidance

  • Giving students access to high‑quality information about careers and labour markets

  • Supporting exploration of different pathways

  • Helping every student develop the skills they need to thrive

Our careers offer is designed around these principles and is practical, student-centred and fully focused on helping young people understand their options.

what our careers advice includes

Our careers adviser provides expert, impartial support to help students explore their interests, understand their choices, and plan their next steps. The goal isn’t to tell them what to do, it’s to help them discover what’s right for them.

Here’s what students at asphaleia can expect:

1. careers guidance conversations

This is a personalised, one‑to‑one discussion where we explore students':

  • Interests

  • Skills

  • Qualifications

  • Future aspirations

It’s ideal if they’re unsure about their direction, feeling stuck, or comparing different options such as university, apprenticeships, or work. Together, our careers adviser and student can start mapping out a clearer picture of their future career path.

2. careers advice and information

Sometimes young people need answers on a specific issue. The Careers Adviser can help by:

  • Giving clear advice on what actions may help in their situation

  • Helping them understand routes, qualifications and next steps

  • Offering guidance on employability topics like CVs, applications and using social media professionally

3. helping students find accurate information

Knowing where to look is an essential skill. We can:

  • Search for information with them during their appointment

  • Direct them to trusted resources they can use independently

This ensures they’re always working with up‑to‑date, reliable information.

what happens in a careers appointment?

A careers chat lasts up to 30 minutes, and during that time the careers advisor can cover all of the above. Every session includes an action plan, which the Adviser emails to the student afterwards.

Here’s what a typical appointment looks like:

1. introductions

The careers adviser starts by explaining the support available and how the session works.

2. setting an agenda

They agree what the student wants to focus on — their goals, questions or concerns.

3. exploring options

They will discuss the student's aims and explore the choices available. This might include:

  • Courses

  • Apprenticeships

  • Higher education

  • Career pathways

  • Employability skills

4. creating an action plan

Together they agree clear, practical steps with timescales. This gives the student a structure to follow after the session.

5. signposting to further support

The careers advisor shares other helpful resources and let's the student know how to access ongoing guidance whenever they need it.
