Functional Skills are accredited qualifications that young people aged 16-18 can do if they haven't managed to achieve a 4 or above in their English and maths GCSEs. Getting English and maths qualifications is essential in the UK for progressing into further education, higher education, and the workplace.
However, as many young people will obtain their GCSEs at secondary school, Functional Skills aren't widely known and there can be some misconceptions about them as qualifications.
This post aims to bring some clarity and bust some myths about Functional Skills and their value.

Did you know Functional Skills English and maths are designed to build real-world skills? They focus on everyday problem-solving, not just theory.

It's a myth that Functional Skills qualifications aren't as valuable as GCSEs. At asphaleia, our Functional Skills qualifications are provided by NCFE, an Ofqual recognised awarding organisation, and are accepted by colleges, universities and employers.

For young people who did not achieve their GCSE's, it can be hard to believe another option will work for them. At asphaleia, we focus our teaching on individual goals and building confidence.

Preparing for the world of work isn’t just about qualifications. Part of gaining experience for life and work is all about soft skills, like communication, teamwork, independence, and much more. It is a unique part of our programmes to help young people to build these skills and qualities alongside formal achievement.
