A new version of The Jungle Book musical was the highlight of an OnTrack ESOL trip to Chichester for asphaleia students in December. Chichester Festival Youth Theatre (CFYT) kindly hosted the visit for our international students, some experiencing a live theatre show for the first time.
This modern, inclusive version of Rudyard Kipling’s original story was a feast for the senses. Colourful animal costumes dazzled and a talented cast of young people sang and danced to new songs written for this version. The students were close to the action as characters such as the wolves prowled around the theatre seats.
The CFYT team gave a very warm welcome to our students and have shared more about the trip below:
On Fri 15th December we were delighted to welcome a group of 16 students from asphaleia and their teachers to Chichester Festival Theatre. The students had the chance to watch the first dress rehearsal for our youth theatre production of The Jungle Book. This brand-new adaptation by playwright Sonali Bhattacharyya featured a huge cast of characters, with over 70 young performers and 20 in backstage roles.
asphaleia students got a sneak peek, before opening night, of the magic coming to life. Our theatre practitioner Poppy introduced them to our theatre spaces, talking about the themes and topics explored in the piece, and they even got a delicious cheeky ice cream in the interval! It was great fun having the students and staff with us and the afternoon was a brilliant way of introducing the joy of live theatre to them. We can't wait to work with them again in our regular weekly drama workshops this term!
CFYT kindly provides weekly Drama Workshops in Worthing for our ESOL students, helping them to build confidence, English speaking/listening and teamwork skills.
