Last month, a group of ESOL students participated in a session delivered by Sophie from West Sussex County Council about recycling. It was a great opportunity to learn about supporting the environment through how we deal with waste, but also enabled to students to practice their speaking and listening skills.

Sophie's presentation included a visual presentation that highlighted items that could and could not be put into the recycling, as well as some facts and figures. Along with the visuals, Sophie brought an array of items that she used to support the presentation. It was very interesting to find out about the council's proposal for 2026 that composting bins will be provided for all households. Sophie explained a little on food waste and what it can be used for.

Some other interesting facts students and tutors alike learned included unexpected items that can be recycled, like toothpaste tubes and empty aerosol canasters - items that a lot of people usually don't think of recycling.

Sophie explained how refuse and recycling was then collected and where it ended up - at the recycling centre in Ford. Sophie talked about some of the new technology, such as conveyor belts, which separated plastics from paper and metals.  asphaleia training has booked a visit to the recycling centre for November this year for students to see this in action.

Leaflets and recycling bags were handed out to students at the end of the presentation and several students asked questions.
