This summer, several of our ESOL groups engaged in a series of creative workshops with Chichester Festival Theatre as part of their summer study programme. The collaboration aimed to inspire and engage participants through creative expression and the performing arts. With three diverse workshops—Beatboxing and Beat Making, African Percussion, and Hip Hop Dancing—there was something for everyone, and the feedback from the young participants was overwhelmingly positive.
finding their voice: beatboxing and beat making
The first workshop introduced the young people to the dynamic world of beatboxing and beat making. Led by experienced professional, Gustavo, this session allowed participants to explore the power of the human voice as their instrument. They learned the basics of beatboxing, including how to create rhythms and sounds using only their mouths, lips, and vocal cords.
The beat making component added another layer of creativity, as participants were given the chance to produce their own beats using digital tools. This combination of traditional vocal techniques with modern technology was a hit, with many of the young people expressing a newfound appreciation for music production. The workshop not only honed their musical skills but also built confidence and teamwork as they collaborated on creating unique soundscapes.
rhythms of the world: african percussion
Next up was the African Percussion workshop, a vibrant and energetic session that brought everyone together through the power of rhythm. The young people were introduced to a variety of traditional African drums and percussion instruments, each with its own unique sound and cultural significance.
Under the guidance of, Ali, a passionate instructor, they learned how to play these instruments and discovered the importance of rhythm in both music and life.
What made this workshop stand out was the sense of unity it created. Making music as a group was not only fun but also deeply rewarding. The beats they played echoed the rich cultural heritage behind the instruments, and the experience left everyone feeling more connected—not just to each other, but to the music itself. The energy was infectious, and by the end, the group had created something truly special together.
expressing through movement: hip hop dancing
The final workshop in the series was all about movement and expression through Hip Hop dance. Led by an energetic and experienced dancer, Rich Smith, this session was an instant favourite. The young people were taught various Hip Hop dance moves, starting with the basics and gradually moving on to more complex routines.
The workshop was designed to be inclusive, allowing participants of all skill levels to join in and have fun. As they learned to pop, lock, and groove to the beat, the young people discovered the joy of expressing themselves through movement.
The Hip Hop dance workshop was more than just a dance lesson; it was an opportunity for the participants to boost their confidence and connect with one another in a positive, creative environment.
creativity and connection with chichester festival theatre
The summer workshops at Chichester Festival Theatre were a highlight for the asphaleia young people, offering them a chance to explore new creative outlets in a supportive environment. Each workshop brought something different to the table, but they all shared a common goal: to empower the participants to express themselves and discover new passions.
The experience was enriching, not just in terms of the skills learned, but in the connections made and the confidence gained. The young people left with a renewed sense of creativity, ready to take on whatever comes next. It was a summer full of inspiration, and we can't wait to see where their newfound talents will lead them.
