Do you need maths and English qualifications?
In the week commencing the 2nd of November, our future focus programme is running a new 16-week maths and English course specifically for 16-24 year olds living in West Sussex looking to boost their CV. Through blended learning in the classroom at our COVID-19 secure centre in Worthing, and remote support, we will help you achieve up to level 2 functional skills qualifications (equivalent to a C at GCSE). We also offer additional 1-1 support with CV and application writing to support you to get a job.
Why should you want maths and English?
Referred to in schools and colleges as core subjects, maths and English are essential subjects. The majority of employers in almost every sector rate literacy and numeracy as the top skills in their search for employees.
Maths and English are seen as basic, fundamental skills and subjects on which the other essential skills and abilities are built. Research has also shown that by gaining maths and English, you:
1. Might earn more – employees with at least functional skills level 2 qualifications on average earn £2,000 more than those who don’t.
2. Will have more opportunities – students with functional skills level 2 qualifications in maths and English have far more options to explore further education courses in college. This means more opportunities to develop knowledge and skills to create a career path that is more valuable.
3. Could be healthier – evidence suggests people with high numeracy and literacy levels are healthier, with a longer life expectancy. This may be because they are able to access better healthcare as well as feel confident explaining themselves clearly. There is also a connection with poor literacy skills and mental health issues. It is suggested an increased ability to articulate emotions and feelings has a direct effect on mental wellbeing.
The ability to use both maths and English in everyday settings is important not just for work, but for emotional, social and physical well-being. Many experts believe this is because people will have a greater understanding of the world around them and in a work environment, this is essential. Maths and English are the building blocks not only for future skills and qualifications but for us to develop as people too.
