children's commissioner launches survey about 'care experience' becoming a protected characteristic

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

For some time, groups have been campaigning for the law to be changed so that being a care leaver becomes a protected characteristic - like disability, race, or sexuality.

This could ensure that care leavers are protected from any barriers that may prevent them from achieving their ambitions.

The children's commissioner has shared that she recognises that there are differing viewpoints to this debate and therefore has launched a survey for young people in care, as well as care experienced adults, so they can express their opinion.
