September marks Sexual Health Awareness Month, an annual campaign that encourages greater understanding of sexual and reproductive health and the role it plays in overall wellbeing. The campaign aims to promote access to trusted information, reduce stigma and encourage open conversations about sexual health. The NHS highlights that sexual health awareness month helps raise understanding of sexual and reproductive health, prevention of sexually transmitted infections and access to appropriate care and support.

At asphaleia, we recognise that experiences relating to health, relationships and wellbeing can be deeply personal. We take a trauma-informed approach across all our services, understanding that every young person brings their own experiences and perspectives. Creating safe, supportive environments where people feel listened to and respected is at the heart of what we do.

sexual health is part of wellbeing

Sexual health is not simply about preventing illness. It is closely linked to physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, self-esteem and quality of life. International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) notes that sexual health can be influenced by many factors throughout a person's life, including health conditions, life experiences and relationships.

For some people, talking about sexual health may feel uncomfortable or difficult. Stigma, misinformation or previous experiences can create barriers to seeking information or support. Awareness campaigns such as this one help create opportunities for compassionate conversations that place wellbeing, dignity and respect at the centre.

Access to accurate, evidence-based information enables people to better understand their health and the support available to them. According to the World Health Organisation, sexual and reproductive health influences people's experiences, opportunities and quality of life throughout their lives. The organisation also highlights that access to reliable information is essential for helping people make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

reducing stigma through understanding

One of the key aims of Sexual Health Awareness Month is to encourage conversations that are respectful and inclusive. IUGA highlights that informed discussions can help reduce stigma and improve understanding of sexual health and wellbeing.

For organisations supporting young people, this means creating environments where questions are welcomed, individuals are treated with dignity, and support is available without fear of judgement. A trauma-informed approach recognises the importance of emotional and psychological safety, empowering people to access information and support at their own pace.

As part of Sexual Health Awareness Month, we're recognising Sexual Health Week 2026, led by Brook. This year's theme,"Let's Connect", focuses on the importance of meaningful human connection and how strong relationships, open communication and a sense of belonging can positively impact our wellbeing.

Throughout the week, Brook is encouraging conversations about healthy platonic, romantic and sexual relationships, helping people feel more connected to themselves and others while tackling stigma, abuse and health inequalities. By sharing expert advice, lived experiences and practical resources, the campaign aims to support people in building healthier, more informed relationships in an increasingly digital world.
