foster care fortnight 2026: this is fostering

Foster Care Fortnight is the UK’s largest campaign to raise awareness of fostering. This year it runs from Monday 11th of May to Sunday 24th of May, with the theme ‘This is Fostering’.
The theme invites us to pause and reflect on what fostering really looks like today. It brings together real experiences, recognises current pressures, and calls for change across the system.
At its heart, this campaign is about people.
the reality of everyday fostering
Fostering is often described in big moments. But the reality is found in the everyday, such as:
Supporting a child through their first day at a new school
Listening when they need to talk, even when words are difficult
Creating routines that bring stability and safety
Celebrating small milestones that mean everything
These moments may seem ordinary. In fostering, they are not. They build trust. They restore confidence. They help children feel secure enough to be themselves. Foster carers provide consistency in times of uncertainty. Their role extends far beyond care. It is about advocacy, patience, resilience, and understanding.
the people behind the role
Fostering is not one experience. It is many. Such as, foster carers supporting children with complex needs or kinship carers stepping forward for family members. Perhaps it is individuals balancing fostering with work and family life or households offering short term, long term, or emergency care.
Each story is different, but they are connected by a shared commitment to children and young people.

The strength of the fostering community lies in this diversity. It reflects the wide range of needs children bring, and the equally wide range of care and support they require. Acknowledging these different stories helps build a more accurate and inclusive picture of fostering today.
