creating space for conversation; HR forums at asphaleia

Recently, colleagues from across asphaleia came together for one of our HR forums. These sessions are designed to create a supportive and respectful space where staff can listen, reflect and share perspectives on issues that affect our working lives and the children and young people we serve.

This particular forum touched on wider societal themes that many people encounter in their day-to-day lives, both inside and outside of work.

While the subject matter was complex, the intention was simple; to give people time to share and feel supported, without pressure to have all the answers.

HR forums are not about debate or decision-making. They are about understanding and strengthening how we work together as a values-led organisation.

Holding these forums regularly brings a number of important benefits:

  • They encourage open communication and help staff feel heard, especially when topics can feel sensitive or difficult to approach in other settings, which also reinforces trust. By creating a structured and facilitated environment, colleagues know there is a safe place to raise questions, share concerns or simply listen and reflect.

  • Another key benefit is consistency. Regular forums help ensure that our organisational values are not just words on a page but something we actively return to and explore together.

  • Forums support our trauma-informed approach by recognising that people bring different experiences into the workplace, and that understanding those differences helps us work more effectively as a team.

  • They also support learning and professional development. They encourage curiosity and self-awareness, all of which are essential when working with children, young people and the professionals who work with them.

  • Importantly, they remind us that no one works in isolation. Taking time to come together strengthens relationships across teams and services, helping us maintain a shared sense of purpose.

For an organisation like asphaleia, where safeguarding and quality sit at the heart of everything we do, these conversations matter. They help us stay thoughtful and aligned with our commitment to doing things well.

We are grateful to everyone who took part, listened with openness and contributed to making the forum a respectful and supportive space.

These sessions are one of the many ways we continue to invest in our people, recognising that reflective teams are essential to delivering the best possible outcomes for children and young people.
