Today, 14th of October 2026, a new national government-led campaign is encouraging more people to consider whether fostering could have a place in their lives.

The Become a foster carer campaign is challenging some of the assumptions that can prevent people from taking that first step.

Its message is:“You already have what it takes. Just share it.”

The campaign website explains that fostering can be more open, flexible and supported than many people expect. It also reminds us of something important: every child deserves a safe, loving home.

it starts with everyday life

When people picture foster carers, they might imagine they need particular qualifications or a very specific type of family life. In reality, the qualities that can make a difference to a child often show up in everyday moments.

Smiling father and daughter brushing teeth together in a bright bathroom, with sunlight and a plant in the background.

It's being there at the end of the school day. Taking an interest in something that matters to them. Creating routines they can rely on. Making home feel like somewhere they belong. Those moments might feel ordinary. For a child who needs stability and care, they can mean a great deal.

The national campaign encourages people to find out what fostering could look like in their own lives. It also emphasises that fostering looks different for different people, and that there are different types of fostering that may suit different circumstances.

you will be supported

Becoming a foster carer does not mean doing it alone. The government campaign highlights the support available throughout the fostering journey, including having a dedicated social worker following approval and access to a support network.

Choosing the organisation you foster with is therefore an important part of deciding whether fostering is right for you. Independent fostering agencies are part of England's fostering system too, offering another route for people interested in becoming foster carers.

There is more than one route into fostering. Find the fostering organisation that is right for you.

At asphaleia, our fostering service is intentionally small and personal, uniquely embedded in the asphaleia organisation, which can additionally support carers and placements with specialist services delivered by experienced staff members. With over 20 years of experience working with children and young people, our Worthing-based agency has a dedicated, local fostering team and foster carers who maintain high levels of care for children and young people.

you don't need to have all the answers to become a foster carer

If you are wondering whether you could foster, you do not have to make that decision today. You can start by finding out more.

The government's Become a foster carer campaign includes information about eligibility, what fostering involves and experiences shared by foster carers. It also explains that the journey to becoming an approved foster carer is supported throughout.

And if you are interested in fostering through an independent fostering agency, you can explore that route too.

The important thing is that people who could give a child a safe and supportive home don't rule themselves out before discovering what's possible.

You might be closer to becoming a foster carer than you think.
