student success on future focus and virtual open day news

July 16, 2020

Yesterday was World Youth Skills Day. According to the UN, people aged 15-24 are three times more likely to be unemployed than adults and more than 1 in 6 are out of work due to Covid-19. At asphaleia training we are able to support NEET young people in West Sussex to gain the skills they need to get a job or onto a further education course.

young person's story from our future focus project

When N came to asphaleia, she had low confidence and when asked what she could put on a CV she said, 'nothing'. N didn’t have any work experience and didn’t think getting a job was realistic for her.

N started engaging with future focus 1:1's, setting targets, discussing long-term plans and goals and with the help of her FF project worker, planned small steps to getting there.

After building some confidence, N joined workshops that focused on getting work ready. N soon built up that CV she originally thought she had nothing to put on, adding skills like communication, teamwork, positivity. With these skills N started exploring different work sectors and settled on customer service.

N felt confident enough to start applying for jobs and was successful in the first job she attended an interview for. N now works in customer service, something she didn’t see as possible at the very beginning of her FF journey.

N’s confidence grew as a result of hard work, self-belief and a dedication to attending sessions and workshops and we couldn’t be prouder.
