what is foster care

On any one day there are 57,000 children living in foster care in the UK, according to the fostering network - that means 70% of all children in care are looked after by foster families. Fostering provides a safe, secure and nurturing family environment, either short or long-term, and allows children to keep in contact with their own families if they wish.

Foster children need home environments that are warm, safe, welcoming and supportive. A good foster home is where the whole family work together to create the right home environment, where a child in need can grow despite the range of challenges they may be facing.

Foster carers work alongside a team of professionals providing children with the highest standard of care - they are never left to face situations alone.

When a child is taken into care, the local authority becomes responsible for his or her welfare. Social workers then work with families to make the home a safe place for a child - with the aim that children and parents can be reunited. Children who cannot return home often live in long-term foster care.

Fostering is not easy and requires commitment - but it offers families with the opportunity to make a huge difference to the lives of the children who desperately need it and can be a very rewarding experience.

What do foster carers do

Key qualities of foster carers include being a great listener, having a good sense of humour, being optimistic, having their feet firmly on the ground and showing resilience. They must also be able to offer the time, commitment, space and skills to care for children separated from their families.
